Storage Tips

GREAT AMERICAN STORAGE SOLUTIONS offers a full line of moving and packing supplies to help you’re your move more efficient and easy.  Moving and packing supplies are for sale at all Great American Storage Solutions facilities. The following tips and suggestions will make your moving and storage experience less stressful.

  • Make sure you place those items most frequently needed nearest to the door.

  • Stack boxes of similar size on top of each other in order to maximize your space.

  • Take an inventory of your stored items and keep the list in a safe place for future reference.

  • Individually wrap your dishes, glass items, and other breakables in packing paper with padding on top and bottom of the box. Plates, saucers and platters should be placed on their sides.

  • Utilize wardrobe boxes to store items such as bedding, clothing, and drapes. Be sure and use the bottom portion of wardrobe boxes to store other items. Otherwise fold your items and store them in dressers.

  • Use smaller boxes for heavy items such as books, documents, small tools or appliances (for ease in handling). Be sure not to pack fragile items in the same box with these items.

  • Furniture, if possible, should be disassembled to conserve space. Stack nightstands on dressers and stand sofas on end. Furniture with drawers can be utilized as storage places for small items.

  • Lamps, picture frames, mirrors, and lamp shades should be packed separately for their protection.

  • Mirrors and pictures should be wrapped in bubble-wrap or blankets, covered with cardboard, marked "fragile" and stacked on end.

  • Mattresses should be stored upright to conserve space.

  • Appliances such as refrigerators and freezers should be defrosted and the doors should remain slightly open.

  • Tools should be thoroughly cleaned and wiped down.

  • Label your boxes, especially ones with glass or liquids "This End Up" or "Fragile." Protect your furniture with pads, covers or blankets. We recommended that plastic not be utilized as a furniture covering.

Please remember, you may not store any combustibles or flammable items, hazardous materials or toxic waste, gasoline, turpentine or propane, or perishable food products.
